10,000 steps is rarer still: between 12% and 17% of members reached it on a typical day, depending on age.

Members aged 45 to 54 walked the most; the youngest and oldest groups the least. Steps come from Apple Health, so these are people who carry an iPhone and track their steps, in the UK and elsewhere: a guide, not a national statistic.

What this means

The gap between most people and the research ranges is a short walk or two a day, not a marathon. About 1,000 more steps a day is a sensible next step.

What the research says

  • The lower risk of death linked with more steps levelled off at about 6,000 to 8,000 a day for adults 60 and over, and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.

  • Each extra 1,000 steps a day was linked with about 15% lower risk of death from any cause.
