The weekend effect: how many more calories do Brits log on a Saturday?
Saturday is the biggest day of the week in our UK members’ food diaries. Compared with their own Monday to Thursday, the typical member logged about 125 kcal more on a Saturday.
The weekend in four numbers
Typical memberEach figure compares members with their own typical Monday-to-Thursday day of about 1,630 kcal logged. February to August 2026. How we worked it out.
The week, day by day
vs own Mon–ThuAll UK members: Saturday +125 kcal, Sunday +100 kcal, Friday +55 kcal on their own Monday to Thursday. Over 2,500 members.
Each bar is the typical (median) member’s logged calories that day, minus their own typical Monday-to-Thursday day. “Share logging 10% more” is the share of members whose typical day was at least 10% above their own Monday to Thursday. Groups under 50 members aren’t shown.
| Day | Extra kcal | Change | Logged 10%+ more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | +5 kcal | 0% | 20% |
| Tuesday | +10 kcal | +1% | 22% |
| Wednesday | +15 kcal | +1% | 22% |
| Thursday | +15 kcal | +1% | 23% |
| Friday | +55 kcal | +4% | 35% |
| Saturday | +125 kcal | +8% | 45% |
| Sunday | +100 kcal | +6% | 40% |
What stands out
- Saturday leads. The typical member logged about 125 kcal (8%) more on a Saturday than on their own Monday to Thursday, and 45% logged at least 10% more.
- It builds from Friday. About 55 kcal more on a Friday, 125 on a Saturday and 100 on a Sunday. Across the whole weekend, the typical member logged about 310 kcal more than on three usual weekdays.
- Women and men alike. On a Saturday, women logged about 115 kcal more (8%) and men about 145 kcal more (8%).
- The youngest show it least. Members aged 18 to 24 logged about 60 kcal (3%) more on a Saturday. Men aged 35 to 44 showed the biggest rise, about 190 kcal (10%).
These are patterns in what members logged. They don’t show why weekends differ, and logging isn’t always the same as eating.
Whose biggest day is which?
For each member with full days logged on all seven days of the week, we found the day with their highest typical total. Saturday came top for 29% of them. If every day were equal, you’d expect about 14% each. For 64% of members, the biggest day fell on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
| Day | Bar | Members |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 9% | |
| Tuesday | 8% | |
| Wednesday | 9% | |
| Thursday | 10% | |
| Friday | 16% | |
| Saturday | 29% | |
| Sunday | 19% |

How we worked it out
- Who: ParrotPal members whose app is set to UK time, who logged food between 1 February and 31 August 2026. Internal and test accounts are left out. The app’s time zone is the closest thing we hold to a country.
- A full day: a day with 3 or more food entries and between 800 and 6,000 kcal logged. This screens out half-logged days and obvious mistakes. Entries a member deleted don’t count.
- Each member against themselves: we took each member’s typical (median) full day from Monday to Thursday, which needed at least 6 such days. A member counts for a day of the week when they logged at least 2 full days of it. Each bar is the middle member’s difference.
- How many: about 2,500 to 3,400 members for each day of the week; more than 2,200 for the weekend total (members with full Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays); more than 2,100 for the biggest-day chart (full days on all seven). Every group shown has at least 50 members, no share rests on fewer than 10 people, and groups of under 200 are marked as smaller.
- Weekend total: for each member, Friday, Saturday and Sunday each minus their own Monday-to-Thursday day, added up. We show the middle member.
- Rounding: calories to the nearest 5 (the weekend total and the weekday baseline to the nearest 10), percentages to whole numbers.
- Data dates: food logged to 31 August 2026; member details as of 7 October 2026. Published 7 October 2026.

What to bear in mind
- Logged isn’t always eaten. People often log less than they eat, and that may differ between weekdays and weekends.
- These are app members, people choosing to track their food, many of them trying to lose weight. They aren’t a random sample of the UK.
- Patterns, not causes. The figures show what members logged, not why.

Do people eat more at the weekend?
In our members' food diaries, yes, on average. Compared with their own Monday to Thursday, the typical UK ParrotPal member logged about 125 kcal more on a Saturday (about 8% more), about 100 kcal more on a Sunday and about 55 kcal more on a Friday, from February to August 2026. That's what members logged, which isn't always everything they ate.
How many extra calories do people have at the weekend?
Across Friday, Saturday and Sunday together, the typical member logged about 310 kcal more than on three of their usual weekdays. About 7 in 10 members logged more across the weekend, and about 4 in 10 logged 500 kcal or more extra.
What day of the week do people eat the most?
Saturday. It was the biggest logged day of the week for 29% of members, more than any other day, against 9% for Monday. For 64% of members, the biggest day fell on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Do men or women eat more at the weekend?
The weekend rise looked much the same. On a Saturday, women logged about 115 kcal more than their own Monday to Thursday (8%) and men about 145 kcal more (8%). Members aged 18 to 24 showed the smallest Saturday rise, about 60 kcal (3%).
How did you work this out?
We compared each member with themselves. For every UK member who logged full days of food from February to August 2026, we took their typical Monday-to-Thursday day, then their typical Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and reported the middle member. A full day means 3 or more entries and 800 to 6,000 kcal. Every group shown has at least 50 members. These are patterns in what members logged, not proof of cause.
